Manchester City has received a massive slap on the wrist from the Premier League. A report from The Athletic claims the club has been found guilty of more than 100 financial charges leveled against it over an eight-year span. The specific punishment remains undecided right now, and City is expected to fight back with an appeal if sanctions land.

"The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality," the club told The Athletic in a statement issued on Friday. "As such Manchester City FC's position remains consistent with the club's statement of February 2023."

The trouble started back in November 2018 when German outlet Der Spiegel published internal emails from City. These documents allegedly detailed schemes designed to hide true income sources while trying to comply with Financial Fair Play rules. City did not dispute the authenticity of the leaked texts but refused to comment because hackers were responsible for the leak.

Those emails triggered a Premier League investigation. By March 2019, UEFA opened its own formal probe into whether Manchester City had broken the book.

In February 2020, UEFA banned City from the Champions League for two seasons due to "serious breaches" of spending rules and a failure to cooperate with investigators. The club also faced a fine of 30 million euros, which was roughly $33 million at the time. Manchester City called UEFA's investigation flawed and announced plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

By July 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban but kept the financial penalty. The fine dropped to 10 million euros, or about $11.3 million, specifically for not cooperating with investigators.

The situation escalated again in 2023 when the Premier League referred City to an independent commission. They alleged more than 100 breaches of financial rules. The club was accused of providing misleading information about its finances between 2009 and 2018, then failing to work with the league's investigators on those findings. Manchester City said it was "surprised" by these accusations but claimed there was a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" to counter them.

City went on to win the Premier League title for the fifth time in six seasons after these charges were brought. The Athletic reported on Friday that the club has been found guilty of all but one of the charges.
