Man Smashes Virgin Mary Statue at NYC Church
Security cameras caught a man leaping over the gate of a New York City Catholic Church and smashing a Virgin Mary statue with a hammer while it was pitch black outside. The footage shows a bearded figure wearing a mask vaulting the fence at Saint Rita Roman Catholic Church in Long Island City, Queens, just before 2am on Saturday.

In less than 30 seconds, the intruder, dressed only in shorts and a T-shirt, scaled the wall into the courtyard. He pulled a hammer from his pocket and struck the statue. With one blow, the Virgin Mary toppled into the flowerbed. Its head snapped off and rolled across the floor before he climbed the fence again and walked away.

The Diocese of Brooklyn confirmed this was not an isolated event but the fourth attack on this specific church since 2024. Officials listed previous incidents including the destruction of a 60-year-old stained-glass window, graffiti scrawled on the sidewalk, defacing a statue of St Francis of Assisi, and damage to a statue of St Jude inside the building.
The New York City Police Department is now investigating the vandalism as a potential hate crime. No arrests have been made so far. This week the NYPD released updated crime statistics showing hate crimes rose by 9.4 percent compared to the same seven-month period last year. John Quaglione, deputy press secretary for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, told Fox News about these rising numbers.

Carmen González, a parishioner, called the event shocking because people walk right past the church without knowing who might be standing next to them waiting to cause damage. She questioned why anyone would harm the church simply for the sake of it. Another attendee, César Colindres, described the attacks as truly awful. He expressed deep regret that believers see the image of the Virgin Mary attacked in such a grotesque way.

Last November someone vandalized a picture of Saint Anthony and wrote on the floor, according to Fox 4 New York. Margarita, another local parishioner, said churchgoers are confused about why the building is being targeted. She suggested the perpetrators might be kids who do not believe in God or others addicted to drugs.

The Daily Mail asked for comment from the Diocese of Brooklyn, Saint Rita Roman Catholic Church, and the NYPD but has not received a response yet. The community faces an uncertain future as investigations continue into these escalating acts of violence against their place of worship.
