Man Sentenced To Life For 45-Year-Old Murder Of Teen Girl

Oct 1, 2026 •Crime

An eighty-year-old man finally faces the full weight of his actions after evading justice for decades. Mark Stanley Personette received a life sentence on Wednesday for killing fifteen-year-old Marissa Harvey back in 1978. The victim was visiting her sister in San Francisco when she went missing during a day trip to Golden Gate Park for horseback riding. Her body washed up the next day near Sutro Heights Park, found by surfers scanning the shoreline. Prosecutors described the scene as horrific; she had been sexually assaulted, beaten beyond recognition, and strangled with a ligature.

Detectives initially used every tool available in the early 1970s to find her killer but hit a dead end. Initial DNA tests on her clothes and a piece of gum stuck to her back matched a male profile, yet no name came up. The case went cold until twenty years later when new technology changed everything. In 2021, investigators turned to investigative genealogy, a method that cross-references DNA against public genetic databases. This technique famously caught the Golden State Killer in 2018 and now helped identify Personette as the suspect.

FBI agents watched Personette discard trash at a Walmart parking lot over fifteen miles from his home. They recovered personal hygiene items containing his DNA, noting he carefully separated them from other garbage. Police matched this fresh sample to the genetic traces left on Harvey's sweater and jeans. Other physical clues also pointed toward San Francisco, including a 1970s city map and license plates with a 1979 registration sticker found at his residence. Personette insisted he never visited the city, but the evidence told a different story.

During his trial, another woman testified that Personette raped her in New Jersey when she was sixteen in 1979. At the time of his arrest, authorities warned other agencies to re-examine unsolved sexual assault homicides involving young women. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office praised the outcome, stating that justice had finally arrived for Marissa Harvey and others like her after nearly fifty years of silence.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins declared that Personette is finally facing the full weight of his actions against Marissa and will spend every remaining day behind bars. She said, "Personette is finally being held accountable for his heinous crimes against Marissa and will spend the rest of his life in prison." The long wait for closure ends with a sentence meant to honor what was lost. Jenkins added that while no verdict can restore Marissa to her family's lives, today's ruling offers a glimmer of peace. "While nothing can bring Marissa back to her family," she explained, "today's sentence hopefully leaves her family with a sense that justice was done for all that they have endured.
