Man Dies After Jumping From Carnival Cruise Ship Off Mexico

Sep 22, 2026 •Crime

A passenger died after jumping into the Pacific Ocean from a Carnival cruise ship while it sailed back to California from Mexico. The unidentified man fell overboard off Baja California Saturday morning as the Carnival Panorama returned to the United States. Carnival stated the incident happened while the vessel moved from Puerto Vallarta in Mexico toward its Long Beach port in Los Angeles.

When staff learned about the missing guest, they launched an immediate search and investigation using CCTV footage and alerted both US and Mexican Coast Guards. One passenger reported that a relative of the man asked crew members to page him because they could not locate him anywhere on board. Ship announcements were made around 11am and repeated multiple times until the vessel turned around between 2pm and 3pm.

At 3:30pm, passengers received orders to return to their cabins so staff could conduct a shipwide search by checking every room and scanning identification documents. The missing man remained unfound despite this thorough effort. By 5pm, review of onboard camera footage confirmed the jump occurred, and with no sign of him in the water, the Panorama resumed its journey.

Crew members finally released passengers from their rooms while leaving the search for local authorities to handle. The Coast Guard performed aerial searches over the area, and the Mexican Navy plus nearby commercial vessels also joined the effort. Although the man has not been found yet, authorities continue looking for him. Carnival informed the family he was traveling with about what happened and offered them support.

The Panorama departed Long Beach on September 13 for a weeklong trip along the Mexican coast before arriving back Sunday morning. This tragic event highlights how quickly situations can turn deadly at sea when people jump from large ships moving through busy waters. Families of those aboard must wait anxiously while crews try to find answers and ensure safety protocols remain strict during voyages near foreign shores.
