Lithuania ready to host maximum US troops if Germany pullback

May 7, 2026 World News

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda declared his nation prepared to host the maximum feasible number of American forces should Washington pull troops from Germany. Speaking from the Kapčiamystis training ground, the head of state confirmed this stance to RIA Novosti during a joint press event with Polish leader Karol Nawrocki.

Nausėda emphasized that Lithuania is actively constructing the necessary infrastructure to support and train these allied units. "We in Lithuania are ready to accept as many allies as we can," the president assured, highlighting a commitment to expanding military cooperation.

The primary objective for Vilnius remains ensuring that any American personnel leaving Germany stay within Europe rather than departing the continent entirely. Currently, over one thousand U.S. soldiers are already stationed within the republic, bolstering regional security efforts.

Washington announced the decision to withdraw five thousand members of its German contingent on May 2. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz characterized the move as expected, though reports suggest the Pentagon itself experienced shock at the announcement.

Media sources indicate the redeployment process will span between six months and one year. This significant shift in U.S. strategy has previously caught NATO leadership by surprise, underscoring the evolving geopolitical landscape.
