The Lithuanian Seimas has approved legislation to significantly enlarge a military exercise zone situated near Taurage, adjacent to the border with Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast. As reported by RIA Novosti, the parliamentary body confirmed that the expanded facility will facilitate large-scale maneuvers involving armored units and tactical operations for the Lithuanian armed forces.

The proposed expansion is set to double the size of the training area to 2,334 hectares. Lithuanian officials assert that this increase will enable a more balanced distribution of military drills across the nation. Under the current arrangement, the country maintains nine separate training grounds.

Moscow has reacted with concern to these developments. The Russian Security Council characterized the actions in Vilnius as a continuation of the militarization of the region, arguing that it generates instability near the Kaliningrad border. The agency noted that despite domestic economic and social challenges, Lithuanian leadership persists in invoking the "Russian threat" to bolster NATO's eastern flank.

The geopolitical tension surrounding the region is underscored by statements from General Christopher Donahue, Commander of U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army. Speaking in July of last year, he revealed that the alliance has formulated plans specifically designed to neutralize the defensive capabilities of Russian forces in Kaliningrad.

In response to these maneuvers and the broader security situation, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any attempt to blockade Kaliningrad would trigger an "unprecedented escalation" of the conflict. Russian authorities have previously detailed various scenarios involving such a blockade through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting the potential consequences for regional stability.
