Legendary Indian Playback Singer Asha Bhosle Dies at 92; Nation Mourns Iconic Voice of Bollywood

Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined Bollywood music through the 1970s and 1980s, died in Mumbai aged 92, her family says. The two-time Grammy nominee died on Sunday at the Breach Candy Hospital, where she was admitted for "extreme exhaustion" and a chest infection. Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed her passing, stating, "My mother passed away today. Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai."

Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages over a seven-decade career. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed "deep sorrow" over her death, calling it a "great loss to the nation." President Droupadi Murmu wrote on X that her passing is "an irreparable loss to music lovers."

Born on September 8, 1933, to a musical family, Bhosle began singing as a child alongside her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, after their father's death. Often compared to Mangeshkar—revered as "India's nightingale"—Bhosle carved her own path, embracing pop, folk, and classical genres. Her early life was marked by hardship, including a turbulent marriage at 16.

She went on to become one of Indian cinema's most versatile voices, earning the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001. Bhosle's collaborations spanned generations, from Bollywood legends to global stars like Gorillaz, whose album *The Mountain* featured her on "Parvat." Tributes poured in from music icons, including AR Rahman, who wrote on Instagram: "She lives forever with her voice and aura... What an artist."

Indian singer Shankar Mahadevan called her death "a very sad day for the music industry," while Bollywood actress Hema Malini, who starred in films Bhosle sang for, said, "Her music will never perish as long as humanity exists." Beyond music, she launched "Asha's" restaurant chains in Dubai and Britain, showcasing her passion for culinary arts.

Bhosle's mortal remains will be kept at her Mumbai residence until Monday morning, allowing fans to pay their respects. Her legacy, spanning decades and genres, leaves an indelible mark on Indian culture and global music.
