Left-Wing Candidates Face Economic and Social Backlash Ahead of Midterms

Oct 17, 2026 •Politics

Larry Kudlow asks a hard question about affordability when politicians promise no fracking alongside free health insurance for illegal immigrants. There is no wonder that this supposed Democratic blue wave might fail to materialize in the upcoming midterm elections. Even The New York Times worries the victory is not guaranteed just eighteen days away. Their recent headline reads, Democrats Worry That a Few Senate Races in Bluer States Aren't Slam Dunks. They cite Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and Troy Jackson in Maine while mentioning Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota. Yet they left some key figures out of that list entirely.

James Talarico stands against oil and gas drilling in Texas as well as raising cattle or beef meals. He also holds strong views apart from his gender confusion regarding the Lord and the Bible. At last night's debate, former Alaska Congresswoman Mary Peltola fell on her sword while answering questions with Senator Dan Sullivan by reading off index cards in full view. This means either she does not know the issue or she got fed the questions ahead of time. Anyway, Mr. Sullivan whooped her in the debate on the merits because she is against fossil fuels which are the Alaskan cash crop.

The Wall Street Journal's Kim Strassel wrote about it today with this title, Alaska Considers Economic Suicide. Basically, under the Biden years with Ms. Peltola's support, Democrats banned oil and gas leases along with mining projects and timber harvests. They stopped new roads and cut back on defense plus they issued no oil and gas leases offshore. There is no national petroleum reserve and no liquefied natural gas money or oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Plus there is a voting record of chronic absenteeism to add to these troubles.

Remember that away from Alaska the Bidens killed the Keystone Pipeline too. There is another reason why Republicans are going to win these blue states and red state Senate races right now. They are complete toss-ups even with phony polls that bias the numbers in favor of one side or another. Speaker Newt Gingrich and I have been talking about so-called Democratic affordability which connects to the big government socialist mantra of medicare for all. Basically if you like your healthcare plan you will not be able to keep it under this proposal.

Some 160 million Americans have employer-based healthcare and they like their current coverage plans very much. They would lose everything under the socialist proposal to nationalize the healthcare system entirely. The Council of Economic Advisers estimates this cost roughly fifty trillion dollars over ten years according to their numbers. Perhaps even worse, piling insult onto injury is that Abdul El-Sayeds of the world want free healthcare for all illegal immigrants as well. Not only that they would get benefits for federal programs like SNAP housing assistance and Medicaid too. So that's at least another trillion dollars by my lights alone on top of the first cost.

Let's get this right about what affordability actually means in today's economy. Affordability means about ten dollars a gallon for gas right now and probably ending gas powered cars soon. Then there is more than fifty trillion for illegals and state run healthcare which adds up fast quickly. Is that really what we call affordability or are you just kidding with those definitions? That is why the Republicans may have a better shot than Democrats in this race.
