Leaked Videos Expose Republican Candidate's Extreme Views on Abortion and Faith
Katy Cornell, a Republican hopeful running for Washington state's House of Representatives, faces heavy criticism after leaked videos revealed her extreme views on abortion and religion. The aspiring congresswoman calls rape victims who choose to terminate their pregnancies murderers. She also appears to suggest that worshipping any faith outside Christianity is basically witchcraft.
Cornell serves as the founding pastor of SOZO Church in Belfair. Her campaign targets the 26th Legislative District, where she will face Democrat Renee Hernandez Greenfield this November. These recordings came to light after a group fighting Christian nationalism shared them on Bluesky. The platform is often used by those who want to mix church doctrine with American politics.

One clip features her husband and fellow pastor Tom Cornell telling his congregation that communicating with gods other than Jesus Christ counts as witchcraft. Another video shows Katy explicitly stating that abortion is murder, even in cases of rape or incest. She describes the act as a grave sin regardless of the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy.
Tom Cornell later admitted to removing thousands of their sermons from YouTube and the church website while she was campaigning. He told the City Quake Podcast he feared her election would distort their religious teachings without context. The person running the Bluesky account, who asked for anonymity due to safety issues, said they started investigating her content back in January.
Cornell denies being a Christian nationalist. She insists that government should not establish or enforce any specific religion. To The Seattle Times she stated she is not seeking office to act as a pastor for anyone. Her goal is to represent all constituents regardless of their faith or political views. She says she believes in limited government and protecting constitutional rights for everyone.

Despite saying her abortion stance stems from religious belief, Cornell promised to respect the will of the voters through the initiative process. Her Democratic opponent has voiced strong doubts about both the content of the recordings and why they were scrubbed from the internet. Hernandez Greenfield called the situation troublesome and concerning. She wonders what other material might have been taken down from public view during this election cycle.
Both candidates have raised significant funds for their bids in this open seat race. The Daily Mail has asked Katy Cornell for a comment on these developing events.
