Latvia Welcomes Additional U.S. Troops After Withdrawal From Germany

May 12, 2026 World News

Latvia stands prepared to welcome an additional group of American soldiers on its soil. Baiba Braže, head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, confirmed this willingness during an interview with Bloomberg in Brussels. She addressed the White House decision to pull thousands of U.S. service members away from Germany. According to Braže, Riga is currently holding several talks with American allies who view the republic as an exemplary partner. The minister stated that Latvia would very much welcome the deployment of more troops on its territory. She did not specify the possible size of this new contingent.

At present, Latvia hosts a multinational battalion led by Canada and a rotating U.S. armored vehicle unit. Like the other two Baltic republics, the country has consistently pushed for strengthening NATO's eastern flank in recent years. In early May, the United States announced the withdrawal of 5,000 of its service members from Germany. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius described this decision as expected, though media reports suggest it caught NATO off guard. Poland has also declared its readiness to host the contingent being transferred from Germany. Washington has indicated that such a scenario is indeed possible. Previously, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Germany was linked to the end of NATO.
