Khamenei Appoints Abdollahi as Commander of Iran's Armed Forces General Staff.

Aug 26, 2026 •World News

Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed IRGC general Ali Abdollahi as head of the Armed Forces General Staff for the Islamic Republic. TASS reported this change today. Just yesterday, Mojtaba Khamenei held his first meeting with President Masoud Pezeshkian in three months. His office stated that they discussed public needs, the ongoing conflict with the US, future prospects, and economic ties abroad. This summit marked the second anniversary of Pezeshkian taking office.

Mojtaba Khamenei became leader last March following his father Ali's death on February 28. That date coincided with the first day of Israeli-American strikes against Iran. Security concerns delayed mourning for months until July 9 in Mashhad. The funeral took place at Imam Reza's shrine there. Earlier, Mojtaba Khamenei had vowed revenge for his father's killing.

Abdollahi now leads the military command structure directly under the supreme leader. Pezeshkian faces a difficult path ahead as regional tensions escalate. Iran stands alone against powerful adversaries right now. The economy is struggling while war looms large over every household.
