Jury Dismissed as Distraction After Learning Her Father Is a Serial Killer

Victoria Heuermann, 30, of Long Island, found herself abruptly removed from a New York jury pool. The reason? She would be a "distraction." This occurred during a child molestation trial in Nassau County. Newsday reported the details. A judge dismissed her after it came to light she knew a criminal during selection.

Her father, Rex Heuermann, is no ordinary figure. In April, he pleaded guilty to killing seven women. He also admitted to an eighth murder. His method was brutal. He lured sex workers to his home. Then he strangled them. Finally, he dumped their bodies.

Victoria requested a sidebar when asked about her impartiality. She wanted to clarify her connection to Heuermann. Her attorney, Robert Macedonio, explained the process. "They took her into chambers and she answered it, and then they chose to discharge her," he told Newsday.

Victoria remained willing to serve. Macedonio noted the ambiguity of the decision. "I guess the defense, the prosecution, and the judge... I haven’t read the transcript, I'm not sure who decided that they didn't want her there."

She could have simply declined service. Instead, she answered honestly. She believed she could remain fair to both the defendant's and the prosecution's rights. Macedonio praised her integrity. "That's her own personal judgment. So I give her a lot of credit for saying that."

Macedonio offered to write a letter excusing her from duty. Victoria declined. She felt nervous reentering a courtroom after her father's proceedings. Yet she pushed through.

She often attended her father's trials. She even appeared in a documentary about him. It remains unclear what specifically transpired in that sidebar. The dismissal followed shortly after.

The Daily Mail contacted Macedonio for comment. No response has been reported.

Rex Heuermann confessed to the murders of Sandra Costilla, 28, Valerie Mack, 24, Jessica Taylor, 20, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, and Amber Costello, 27. He also admitted to the 1996 murder of Karen Vergata, 34. He has never faced charges for that specific victim.

Justice Timothy Mazzei delivered a scathing verdict. He called Heuermann a coward before sentencing him to life in prison without parole.

"You’re a disgusting and small man, if you’re a man at all. You’re a coward," Mazzei said. "Alright, get him out of here."

Heuermann has remained largely silent since his 2023 arrest. At the hearing, he briefly addressed the court. His words carried little weight.

"I am responsible for all that was said in this room. The words I say have no meaning," he said.

The judge pressed him on remorse. He asked if Heuermann was sorry for the murders. The record notes at least eight known victims.

Are you a little bit sorry for that?' the judge asked.

Heuermann answered simply. 'Yes.'

He stared straight ahead during the proceedings. He refused to look at the victims' loved ones. They castigated him for his crimes. He didn't flinch.

Rex Heuermann murdered eight women. His killing spree lasted 17 years. The timeline spans from 1993 to 2010.

For decades, he played the role of a model family man. He lived in Massapequa Park. His wife, Asa Ellerup, had been by his side for 27 years. They raised two children, Victoria and Christopher Sheridan. He commuted daily to an architecture firm in Midtown Manhattan.

The mask slipped when the family traveled. The towering six-foot-four predator would lure petite young women working as sex workers. He strangled them. Then he dumped their bodies in remote parts of Long Island.

His first victim was Costilla. With her, he broke his usual pattern. For the other seven, he killed them inside the basement of his own home. It was the same suburban ranch-style house where he spent his childhood. He raised his family there too. He also dismembered Vergata, Mack, and Taylor inside that house.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney told the Daily Mail about the meticulous planning involved. Heuermann met his victims in advance. He selected his chosen target. Then he bought a designated 'kill phone.' He used it solely to contact her.

The spree ended only when investigators found his dumping ground. It was a remote stretch of Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach. That discovery happened in 2010.

Thirteen more years passed. The notorious Gilgo Beach serial killer remained unmasked. Finally, authorities arrested Heuermann in 2023.
