Joe Root 'Hacked Off' as Brydon Carse Scandal Overshadows England's Form

Aug 26, 2026 •Sports

Joe Root is fed up. The England captain says he is "hacked off" that a stellar return to form has been drowned out by trouble off the field involving Brydon Carse. Carse was dropped from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan after police videos showed him being led away in handcuffs from a nightclub in Derby on Saturday. He has now been referred to the Cricket Regulator.

This incident adds to a growing list of alcohol-fuelled scandals that have plagued England since their disastrous tour of New Zealand and Australia last year. Harry Brook got into an altercation with a bouncer in Wellington, while Ben Duckett was filmed appearing drunk during the Ashes series loss to Australia. Back in June, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson received written warnings and were stood down for breaking a curfew at a London venue. Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket shortly after those events, handing the red-ball captaincy back to Root.

England crushed Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs just three days into Root's first match back in charge last week. The performance was commanding, yet the narrative has shifted entirely to Carse's arrest. At a news conference on Tuesday, Root voiced his frustration clearly. "If I'm being brutally honest, I'm really hacked off," he said. "I'm really disappointed that after last week's performance, we're sat here and we're talking about something that is not related to it at all."

"It's not the isolated incident itself," Root continued. "It's the fact we continuously keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it's detracting from what we are doing on the field." He emphasized that these errors prevent them from showcasing their talent.

A curfew was introduced for players in January following the trouble down under. Despite the pressure, Root insists he will not impose one again. "I still don't believe that's the way to go," the 35-year-old stated. "It's important we create something bigger than that. It's about having something long lasting that we can be proud of." He noted that the squad is already discussing what it means to play for England and wants to build a player-driven culture that fans can support. That change, he admits, won't happen overnight.

Carse was not picked for the opener and has been withdrawn from the team before Thursday's match at Lord's. The focus remains on whether the squad can finally settle down and perform without distraction.
