Jennifer Esposito Explains Why She Walked Away From Hollywood

Aug 26, 2026 •Entertainment

Jennifer Esposito finally reached a breaking point after years of trying to meet Hollywood's impossible expectations. During a recent appearance on Maria Menounos' Heal Squad podcast, the Blue Bloods alum opened up about her struggles as a young actress and explained why she decided to walk away from the industry entirely. She remembered feeling deep anxiety while trying to be what everyone wanted her to be. Her manager once called her during filming and asked if she was happy on set. Esposito did not understand the question until he revealed that a producer had complained because she never said good morning. The criticism caught her completely off guard.

She responded by saying they started at 5 in the morning just to learn lines and do their job. Nothing she was doing felt right according to the studio standards. Speaking out about serious concerns presented another major problem for her. She noted that if you ever speak up about abuse situations, people tell you not to do it because there is supposedly no right step available. The actress also alleged a clear double standard between men and women in Hollywood. She pointed specifically to Armie Hammer making a smooth return back into the industry despite his past issues.

Esposito recalled questioning a stunt where fake glass was supposed to explode directly in her face. Producers told her they were just going to blow the fake glass in her face without hesitation. When she asked if that was right, they pressured her not to hold up production. They implied she would be held up unless she agreed to proceed immediately. After years of questioning herself and revisiting painful experiences in therapy, Esposito realized she could not continue down the same path any longer. She wrote a little bit here and there until it became one awful experience after another while developing her movie Fresh Kills.

Then came her breaking point around New Year's when she thought about quitting because she felt so miserable. Before walking away completely, however, she felt compelled to make Fresh Kills first. This female-centered Mafia drama allowed her to end on her own terms and finally do what she believed she could do. She realized no one was coming to save the day or answer her calls for change. No one cared about her complaints that women should be in more films with stories from women. If you think you can do it, then just do it according to her advice.

Getting the movie made brought another round of rejection from potential backers. They offered five million dollars if she could secure three male stars instead of focusing on female talent. She was also asked if she would step aside for a male director during the production process. After another discouraging pitch, Esposito decided to stop asking others to take a chance on her project. She went out to her husband after getting off a Zoom call and said she was mortgaging the house to finish this film. The decision came down to betting on herself instead of waiting for permission from Hollywood gatekeepers.

You have never seen me direct a film before. No one knows what I can do. Yet, if I am asking others to bet on my vision, then I must be willing to bet on myself first and foremost. That specific gamble led directly to the creation of "Fresh Kills." It allowed Esposito, who officially relocated to Paris three months ago, to finally shoot the movie she always wanted before closing this chapter of her career exactly how she planned.

"I will never doubt my ability again," she stated firmly. "No matter what anybody says, I know exactly what I'm capable of. And it was wonderful to be able to give myself that."

She admitted her background has never been steady. "I don't think I have ever had a calm nervous system," Esposito said honestly. "My house was crazy. My surroundings growing up were crazy. Then getting into this industry... I just finally got to the point where I thought, 'Why do you keep accepting crumbs from every aspect of your life?'"

Now living in Paris for nearly three months, she feels like a different person entirely. She noticed herself smiling while walking down the street yesterday. She joined a gym and used the swimming pool. It has been an unknown amount of time since her last swim.

"Like, I don't know what to say," she continued. "But it's a piece of finally seeing myself and saying, 'Nobody, nobody that I'm asking has to do anything. It's OK. I'm not mad. I'm just going to excuse myself.' And it's seriously one of the most powerful things I've ever done for myself. One hundred percent.
