JD Vance Attacker Pleads Guilty Amid Mental Health Claims

Sep 2, 2026 •Crime

William D DeFoor, 26, has pleaded guilty. He faces charges for attacking Vice President JD Vance and damaging property in Ohio. His lawyers argued an extensive history of mental health issues drove the attack. They also pointed to a schizophrenia diagnosis. The US Attorney's Office in Ohio announced this on Tuesday. The suspect admitted guilt after striking windows with a hammer.

DeFoor is the son of two wealthy doctors. He may be transgender and has transitioned to female, going by the name Julia. This background came into focus when he stormed Vice President Vance's property earlier this year. Secret Service agents caught him in the early hours of January 5. The vice president and his family were away in Washington DC at that moment.

DeFoor ran along the front fence of Vance's $1.4 million Cincinnati home. He tried to smash the driver's side window of an unmarked federal law enforcement vehicle. He hit it multiple times with his hammer. Law enforcement demanded he drop his weapon. DeFoor refused those orders and kept striking windows at Vance's residence. Charging documents say prosecutors estimate the damage reached $28,000 worth of government property.

US Attorney Dominick S Gerace II spoke out against such acts. He stated violence against political leaders or their families has no place in society. Elected officials must carry out duties free from threats and vandalism. Perpetrators who risk that freedom through destructive actions will be vigorously prosecuted, the attorney said. Defense lawyers previously claimed DeFoor's actions had nothing to do with Vice President Vance specifically. They insisted the crime was not politically motivated.

Catherine DeFoor, his mother, issued a statement in January. She called mental illness a terrible thing that can take over the life of a beautiful person. Unfortunately for her child, it took over his life in ways nobody imagined. Her family loves and supports him deeply despite this struggle. Legal records show prior incidents linked to his condition. In 2023 he was charged with trespassing at the University of Cincinnati Health Psychiatric Emergency Services. The court ruled him incompetent to stand trial then dismissed the case.

A year later he faced two counts of vandalism for breaking windows at a local business. A court ordered him to receive treatment. His mother eventually received legal guardianship after he was found incompetent by reason of mental illness. DeFoor's lawyers asked for his release from custody pending trial based on these struggles. The case highlights how personal tragedies can escalate into crimes against the state.

Defense lawyers made a push to get their client released, claiming his crime was limited to smashing windows and a car with a hammer while ignoring Secret Service commands. They argued that even in an active mental health crisis, the act of damaging property without listening to shouts does not justify holding someone. The only reason this specific incident matters is its location: the Vice President's house.

Prosecutors have stated there is zero evidence linking the attack to politics. The young man was clearly struggling when he used a tool to hurt his neighbors' home and vehicle. He is not a naturally violent individual, just someone caught in a severe personal storm.

Police and Secret Service agents surrounded the property right after the break-in occurred outside Vance's $1.4 million Cincinnati residence. The Vice President and his family were actually away in Washington DC at that moment.

Attorneys laid out a history of schizophrenia for DeFoor, detailing his time in and out of medical facilities. Reports from The Daily Mail note he attended an elite Catholic high school costing $27,000 a year. He appears to have transitioned to female and now goes by the name Julia. A Facebook profile under this new identity was created just one month before the incident happened.

The Cincinnati native grew up in the wealthy Hyde Park neighborhood inside a $1.3 million home with his surgeon father, William, pediatrician mother Catherine, and two younger siblings named Libby and Alex. His dad works as a pediatric urologist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital while his mom is a general pediatrician at St Elizabeth Physicians in Kentucky.

Despite excelling at The Summit Country Day School, DeFoor does not seem to have finished a traditional four-year university degree. He spent time in a locked-door mental health facility after being arrested in 2024 and found a treatment plan that worked well. He managed his symptoms and even started working on his bachelor's degree until they returned him in December 2025.

Judge Douglas R Cole denied the request to let DeFoor wait for trial at his parents' home. The young person remains locked up. The US Attorney's Office says a sentencing hearing will happen later. He faces up to ten years in prison for these crimes. Reporters from The Daily Mail have reached out to his legal team for comment.
