Israeli Strikes Kill Five More Amidst US-Brokered Gaza Truce

Aug 31, 2026 •World News

Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip have claimed at least five more lives this week, even as a US-brokered agreement promised a pause in the fighting. Medics confirmed on Monday that two people died when an Israeli missile hit a crowd gathered near a municipal public park in Gaza City. That neighborhood is now filled with displaced families forced from their homes. Several others suffered injuries in the blast.

A separate strike struck a vehicle in the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood of western Gaza City, killing at least three more individuals according to local health officials. The Israeli military stated that both attacks were aimed at Hamas fighters but offered no proof to back up those claims. Relatives and friends gathered Monday at al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical facility, to honor the two men who died in the park incident before their bodies moved to a cemetery for burial.

The violence continues with little respite. Israel has ramped up its assaults across the territory despite an October deal meant to bring calm. An Israeli strike on Deir el-Balah in central Gaza on Sunday took the lives of two Palestinians, including a three-year-old child. Saturday's attacks claimed at least four more victims.

"There is no ceasefire," said Amjad Abu Abdo, a relative of one of the people killed Monday. He spoke to Reuters news agency about the daily horror. "There has not been one good day in Gaza since October 7, [2023]." Abu Abdo described the constant fear that hangs over every household. "I swear, we do not sleep from the sound of drones," he said. "You sleep scared of being hit."

Since the so-called ceasefire took effect, the Ministry of Health for Gaza reported that 1,313 Palestinians have died from Israeli attacks. The Palestinian Centre for Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons added on Saturday that between 4,000 and 5,000 others remain missing, believed dead under the rubble. On the other side, the Israeli army reported five deaths in its own ranks since October as well as the death of one civilian contractor working with the military.

The toll on the population remains staggering. Since Israel's war began in October 2023, nearly 73,500 Palestinians have been confirmed killed and nearly 174,500 injured by Israeli forces, according to the Health Ministry. Most of those wounded are women and children. The risks to communities like this one are clear: hospitals become targets, neighborhoods turn into graveyards, and families lose their only chance at safety. The promise of a break in the violence has proven hollow on the ground.
