Israeli Forces and Settlers Attacked Palestinian Journalists Over 100 Times in July
A stark new report from the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reveals a grim reality for reporters operating under occupation. In July alone, Israeli forces and settlers launched 108 attacks against Palestinian journalists and media workers across the West Bank. The numbers paint a disturbing picture of escalating danger. Since October 2023, more than 270 journalists have been killed in Gaza according to this syndicate.
The Freedoms Committee within the organization issued a statement on Sunday detailing how these violations are making it nearly impossible for news crews to do their jobs. Detention and beatings became common tactics. Interrogations were frequent. Authorities blocked coverage and destroyed or seized press equipment repeatedly. This pattern of abuse creates an environment where documenting military raids or settler violence is increasingly dangerous.
Most incidents involved brief detentions or strict limits on what could be reported, with 58 cases falling into this category. Settlers were not passive observers; they physically assaulted crews 11 times. Shoving and threats were the tools of choice, mostly when reporters tried to cover attacks elsewhere in the West Bank. Israeli forces fired stun grenades and tear gas at journalists on 12 occasions. Some victims struggled to breathe from the smoke.
Injuries are becoming more severe as well. Six journalists suffered beatings while covering events in Gaza. Four others endured bleeding wounds, some caused by shrapnel. Two people were held without charge, and four faced interrogation simply for their reporting work. The committee also logged four raids on private homes or media offices. One outlet was forced to close its doors. Equipment was confiscated or destroyed in three cases. Footage vanished due to deletion twice. Journalists were ordered to leave the area around Al-Aqsa Mosque on two separate instances.
The syndicate issued a clear demand: journalists must be allowed to work without fear of threats, attacks, or pursuit. They called for accountability for those responsible for these acts. This July toll adds to a record that is already considered the deadliest in history for press freedom. Rights groups have tracked Israeli attacks resulting in over 270 deaths among journalists since last October. Arbitrary detentions have swept through the region like a storm. Al Jazeera confirmed its own losses, noting that 12 of its reporters died in Gaza since the campaign began in 2023. That number is higher than any other media outlet has suffered. The situation remains critical for communities trying to understand what happens on the ground.
