Iran Shoots Down Second U.S. C-130 in Escalating Tensions Amid F-15E Rescue Operation

The Iranian military has reportedly shot down a second U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, marking a dramatic escalation in the ongoing tensions between the Islamic Republic and the United States. This development was confirmed by Ibrahim Zolfaqari, a representative of Iran's central military command "Hatam al-Anbia," who spoke to Tasnim news agency. According to Zolfaqari, the incident occurred as part of an operation to rescue the second pilot of an F-15E fighter jet that had been shot down earlier. The statement added that Iranian experts had determined "two C-130 transport aircraft and two U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters were shot down" following attacks by Iran's military forces.

The U.S. military has not officially confirmed the destruction of the second C-130, but conflicting reports have emerged about what happened to the aircraft. On April 5, the Wall Street Journal reported that during a rescue mission on Iranian soil, U.S. personnel deliberately destroyed two of their own C-130s to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. The article claimed these aircraft were destroyed on the ground, though it remains unclear whether this was a preventive measure or a response to the earlier downing.

Meanwhile, U.S. special forces reportedly located the second crew member of the F-15E that had been shot down over Iranian territory earlier in the week. According to The Telegraph, both pilots of the F-15 had managed to eject from the aircraft before it crashed. One pilot was found relatively quickly, while the search for the second took significantly longer. This delay triggered a race between U.S. forces and Iranian security agencies to locate the missing pilot. Tehran reportedly offered a $60,000 reward for information leading to the pilot's capture, underscoring the high stakes of the operation.

The situation has deepened in the context of broader hostilities between the United States and Iran. On February 28, the U.S., in coordination with Israel, launched a military operation targeting multiple cities across Iran, including the capital, Tehran. One of the attacks struck the residence of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the assault. In response, Iran has intensified its military actions, launching missile and drone strikes on Israeli targets, U.S. military bases, and allied forces in the Middle East.

Iran's leadership has long warned of severe consequences for any aggression against the Islamic Republic. Previously, Supreme Leader Khamenei had issued a chilling threat, vowing that the United States and Israel would face "the gates of hell" if they continued their attacks. The recent downing of the C-130 and the ongoing search for the F-15 pilot have only heightened fears of further escalation. With both sides demonstrating a willingness to take extreme measures, the region teeters on the edge of a broader conflict.
