Iran Offers to Mediate Saudi-Houthi Conflict After Airport Attack

Oct 12, 2026 •World News

Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud got a call from Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister. The exchange happened after Houthis, backed by Iran, hit Saudi airports and killed people. A report from the Saudi state news agency confirmed the conversation took place.

Araghchi said on Sunday via Telegram that sticking to military tactics while ignoring politics only makes things worse. He told his counterpart there is no way out of these crises with bullets. Just last week, Araghchi declared there was no military fix for the US war in Ukraine either, insisting only negotiations built on fairness could stop the fighting.

Tehran offered to help start talks between Riyadh and Yemen's Houthis. They want a political solution that ends the violence. This comes after an attack on the Riyadh airport left 12 people dead and injured nearly 300 others. That same day, President Donald Trump said he might rethink America's role in Yemen. He is now looking at restarting strikes on Iran.

That stance contradicts what Washington said Thursday. Back then, officials claimed US attacks on Iran would wait until after the midterm elections. The shift signals things are moving fast in a region already on fire.

Diplomatic channels between Tehran and Riyadh stay open even when tensions spike. Embassies restored by a Chinese deal in 2023 still work. Before that agreement, seven years of no contact fueled proxy wars across the Middle East. But relations have slipped badly since late February, when the US war against Iran began.

Since then, Tehran and its allies have struck US military sites and oil fields in Saudi Arabia. Prince Faisal warned Iran back in March 2026 that patience for attacks on Saudi soil and those of neighbors was running out. He told them to recalculate their strategy or face consequences.
