Iran Expels Swedish Diplomat After Reciprocal Embassy Row
Tehran has demanded a Swedish diplomat leave Iranian soil within 48 hours. This retaliatory move follows Wednesday's announcement from Stockholm that an Iranian embassy official must depart the country immediately. Sweden cited activity incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations as the reason for its action. The Iranian Foreign Ministry called this development unjustified on Thursday. They argued it was not a normal diplomatic disagreement but rather interference in the Islamic Republic of Iran's Embassy work.
Alireza Yousefi, Iran's director general for Western Europe, summoned the Swedish ambassador to Tehran during a heated meeting that same day. He leveled sharp protests at Sweden's policies. Specifically, he accused them of hosting anti-Iranian terrorist elements and groups. The ministry stated they would take necessary measures to protect their national rights, which included this reciprocal expulsion. Iranian state news agency IRNA reported the details of the ultimatum given directly to the ambassador.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard defended her government's choice. She said the order was made to safeguard Swedish citizens and interests. Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer added more weight to the decision on state television. He claimed Iran has conducted activities over a long period that threaten security in Sweden and against Israeli and Jewish interests. Strommer insisted Iran is making use of criminal networks to achieve its objectives.
The tension rises as these two nations trade blows over diplomatic grounds. One side claims another is bowing down to outside pressure or acting under the influence of foreign regimes. The other insists on following international law to protect their own people. Both sides are now waiting to see if further steps will be taken in this escalating exchange between Tehran and Stockholm.
