Iowa Hawkeyes Edge Michigan in Thriller at Same Stadium

Sep 27, 2026 •Sports

At the very same stadium where Michigan fans felt cheated by an extra second during their disputed victory over Western Michigan, the Iowa Hawkeyes seized their last chance Saturday. Quarterback Hank Brown found Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown as the clock hit zero, sending No. 17 Iowa past No. 18 Michigan with a final score of 20-19.

"To be able to silence a stadium like that, there's no greater feeling," Brown said after the whistle blew.

The Hawkeyes moved 91 yards on their winning drive. An unnecessary roughness penalty against Michigan near midfield on third down helped Iowa get closer to the end zone. Brown's 29-yard pass to Addison Ostrenga set up the final score with just two seconds left on the board.

"We prep for situations like these throughout the week in practice all the time," Brown said. "Why do you prepare for it? For a moment like that."

Brown refused to comment on whether this win made up for Western Michigan's earlier loss to Michigan.

"I'm not going to speak on that," he said after chuckling.

Bryce Underwood threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan early in the fourth quarter. That was their second scoring connection of the game. Yet the Wolverines, who sit at 3-1 and 0-1 in conference play, could not make enough plays on either side of the ball to secure the victory.

"We would've liked to run the clock out," coach Kyle Whittingham said. "That was disappointing."

Iowa took an early lead in the fourth quarter when Brown found Vander Zee for 16 yards. Then Underwood dropped back, stepped up, rolled right and launched a long touchdown pass to Buchanan for a 19-14 advantage. His attempt at a two-point conversion fell incomplete.

Iowa lined up for a fourth-down play at the Michigan 28 with little time remaining. Left guard Leighton Jones was flagged for a false start. Facing fourth-and-6, head coach Kirk Ferentz chose to have Caden Buhr kick a 51-yard field goal. The ball went wide right with 2:33 left on the clock.

Iowa's Big Ten schedule continues next week with a road trip to Columbus to face Ohio State. Michigan will look to regroup on the road against Minnesota.
