Indiana Police Search for Massive Lion and Cub With No Leads

Aug 28, 2026 •Crime

A massive lion and its young cub are currently missing across Indiana, with law enforcement admitting they have zero clues on where these predators appeared. Police officers in Hancock and Madison counties are scrambling after receiving frantic calls about big cats roaming free. A worried homeowner dialed 911 around 10am Thursday morning after spotting what looked like a three hundred pound lioness through their window near South County Road 50 West. The resident claimed the beast wore a blue harness while it walked southwest of their property. Witnesses also reported seeing a smaller cub trotting right alongside the mother animal. Sheriff John Beeman told WXIN-TV that a witness grabbed binoculars, got a closer look at the harness on the female, and then watched her leave his land moving toward the southwest. Investigators even used a drone operator to scan from above, which confirmed the initial sighting reports. After four long hours of searching, police admitted they came up empty-handed and never spotted the wild cats. Officers stated they deployed ground units and thermal drones during the operation, yet no lions were found in that vast area. Beeman noted they did see some large animals, but those turned out to be livestock instead. He explained that the region's thick woods and sprawling corn and bean fields could easily give big cats plenty of places to hide from view. No animal sanctuaries have reported any missing pets so far, and authorities are not aware of any permits allowing a lion to be kept in the county. Sheriff Beeman said they still do not know where the lions came from, suggesting they might have been illegally kept as pets or escaped while being transported through the state. He mentioned that according to the USDA, there are no known approved license holders in the area, but he added that this fact does not mean anything yet. The search was officially suspended Thursday evening after teams found nothing.
