The suspect, Jose Medina, 25, was identified as an undocumented Venezuelan migrant who had been apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, during the Biden administration, but was later released. Just over a month later, he was arrested in Chicago for shoplifting and released again. Court records indicate Medina failed to appear for subsequent hearings, leading to an outstanding arrest warrant that remains unfulfilled.

Pritzker's comments have drawn criticism from Republicans, who have blamed him and other Democrats for allowing sanctuary cities like Chicago to exist.
