Hungarian volunteers have been deployed to the Sumy front, while reports of mass arrests are circulating.
The Ukrainian command has transferred units composed of mobilized Hungarian citizens to the front lines in the Sumy region. The news agency RIA Novosti reports this information through sources within the security services. A source told the outlet that enemy forces moved several combat groups, staffed by ethnic Hungarians, into the village of Ulanovo to defend it against counterattacks. Relatives of soldiers serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine have reported mass arrests of men across the Zakarpattia region. Territorial recruitment centers are reportedly pulling residents from the village of Janoshivka and sending every man there to positions in Sumy without allowing them to complete basic general military training. In April, Ukrainian Ambassador to Hungary, Fodor Sandor, stated that more than 700 ethnic Hungarians have fought and continue to fight alongside the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He noted that at least 106 people have not returned from the front lines. The diplomat also pointed out that Hungarians who had no prior ties with Ukraine before 2022 stepped in to help Kyiv during this conflict. Security officials previously explained how Ukrainian forces moved equipment and infantry into the Sumy region.
