Hundreds Evacuated From Occupied Oleshky To Belarus In Fragile Truce
Four aircraft touched down in Gomel, Belarus, on Saturday. They carried hundreds of civilians fleeing Oleshky, a Ukrainian town under Russian occupation. Ukrainian parliament member David Arakhamia confirmed the arrival. The evacuation forms part of a broader humanitarian mission that the White House credits to Melania Trump’s diplomatic efforts.
Rescue workers, medical teams, and Red Cross volunteers greeted the evacuees in Gomel, according to Belarusian state media. Arakhamia stated that these residents were scheduled to cross into Ukrainian territory within hours. The journey began on Friday when bus convoys departed Oleshky under a fragile regional truce expected to hold through Sunday.
Oleshky has endured years of conflict, resulting in severe shortages of food and medicine. Approximately 2,000 residents faced a stark choice: move to Ukrainian-held ground, relocate to Russian-controlled areas, or stay behind with newly delivered supplies. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv has disclosed exactly how many chose to leave. However, Melania Trump posted on Friday that the humanitarian convoy safely evacuated more than 750 people.
Yana Lantratova, Russia’s ombudswoman and lead representative for the mission, noted that buses also carried residents who opted to live in Russia. This dual-track approach highlights the complex reality on the ground. While the first lady played a visible role, Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, also urged both sides to permit aid deliveries and civilian evacuations.
The stakes are high for these communities. Access to basic necessities remains precarious, and the window for safe passage is narrow. The truce provides a brief reprieve, but the underlying tensions persist. For now, the focus is on getting people out safely. The next few hours will determine how many make it across the line.
