Houston Cougars Travel to Face Texas Tech in Friday Night Spectacle

Sep 18, 2026 •Sports

College football fans often get spoiled by games spread across multiple days as the season deepens. Right now, action is mostly limited to Friday and Saturday nights. But look ahead a bit. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and NFL fillers make up the rest of the schedule. Tonight brings us a showdown between two top teams. Houston travels to face Texas Tech in what promises to be a Friday night spectacle.

The Houston Cougars arrive at tonight's contest sitting 2-0 and ranked 22nd in the nation. They are solid, yet probably not quite good enough to crack the college football playoffs. My guess is they end up with a bowl game appearance before then. Getting there requires work. The team has played two games so far. First came Oregon State, which was decent but hardly great. Last week they faced the Southern Jaguars.

Houston has been impressive on offense. Quarterback Conner Weigman has looked great in his first couple of games. He threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns while managing just one interception. The two primary running backs, Makhi Hughes and Reshaun Sanford, have also provided big production. They combined for 242 yards and four touchdowns over 40 rushing attempts.

Texas Tech Red Raiders are one of those clubs hovering on the borderline of the College Football Playoff race. They will need some big wins to get into that conversation officially. As of right now, they sit 2-0 and are ranked 13th in the nation. Their first game saw them beat Abilene Christian by a score of 33-10. The next matchup was against Oregon State. That contest was closer, but still a comfortable win for the Red Raiders at 35-24.

It is rare to see two teams with a common opponent this early in the season. It offers a little insight into each squad, though not much more than that. In Texas Tech's two games, they have attacked both via the air and on the ground. Their offense has been a bit more balanced than their opponents'. They logged 62 passing attempts versus 86 rushing attempts. Total yards break down to 495 through the air compared to 328 on the ground.

In those Oregon State games, Houston scored 33 and allowed 20 points. Texas Tech put up 35 while giving up 24. That puts both totals at 53 and 59 combined. Looking at how these games have been played, the offenses look ahead of the defenses for both squads. I like both quarterbacks in this game. I also think the running games should find their way to make an impact. Give me the over 53.5 for this one.
