Heartbreak at the Zoo: Newborn Elephant's Uncertain Fate.
A heartbreaking scene is unfolding at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. A newborn Asian elephant, Linh Mai, has been rejected by her mother. This follows the viral heartbreak of Punch the monkey from earlier this year.

Linh Mai arrived on February 2. However, her mother, Nhi Linh, initially showed aggression toward the calf. This forced the zoo to seek help from an "auntie" named Swarna.

Swarna is proving to be a "natural" caregiver. Even without having birthed a calf, she possesses deep instincts. The museum explained that Swarma provides a perfect balance of "maternal care" and independence.

Why Nhi Linh shunned her remains a mystery. While abandonment is "very rare" among Asian elephants, there may be underlying causes. Joshua Plotnik, a psychology professor at Hunter College, told The Guardian that mothers might reject calves due to stress. He noted that certain circumstances can also jeopardize the safety of the herd.

The bond between the calf and Swarna is growing. Initially, Linh Mai relied on her human keepers for bottle feedings. Now, she follows Swarna’s lead. The zoo noted that Linh Mai no longer runs ahead but waits for the "ok" to move. It has been "really cool" to watch them communicate.

The care required is intense. The zoo described the round-the-clock feedings as "one of the most exhausting experiences our team has ever been through." Yet, the staff says it is worth "all the blood, sweat and tears" to see her thrive. Despite the separation, Linh Mai remains "full of life" and "tons of fun."

Social media is reacting with heavy hearts. One TikToker lamented, "We have another punch situation. my heart can't take this anymore." Other fans expressed deep confusion. One user asked, "Why would the mom reject her?" while another shared mixed emotions, saying, "mamas keep rejecting their babies almost like they feel forced to have them." Some fans even joked, "now i am crying over baby elephants.
