Haitian Immigrant Dies After Leaving Shoulder on Ohio Interstate

Sep 2, 2026 •US News

A young man from Haiti lost his life in Ohio under tragic circumstances tied directly to federal immigration policy. Pierre Damas Bel, twenty years old, walked into traffic on Interstate 70 after parking on the right shoulder, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He died at the scene of that Monday incident while wearing a GPS monitor on his ankle. The patrol confirmed he succumbed to fatal injuries and stated the case remains under investigation.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called this event a horrible, horrible tragedy just Tuesday. Bel had graduated from high school in the state and served in junior ROTC. Those who knew him described him as well-liked with great dreams for what he could achieve or contribute to this country. The governor asked hard questions during his remarks: Is picking people up and facing deportation really what we want done? Do we want that happening in our name?

Bel's father, Pierre Ronal Bel, told reporters his son was distraught after weeks of wearing the ankle monitor. He noted that many Haitian immigrants in the Springfield area faced this requirement after the Supreme Court cleared the way for the administration to end Haiti's temporary protected status designation. This legal shift potentially exposes roughly 350,000 Haitian nationals to removal proceedings.

In his final days, Bel did not seem like himself anymore. His father said he was such an energetic kid who loved life, friends, family, and education. But now he looked different. Wearing the monitor made him feel treated like an animal according to reports from WSYX. On Monday morning before eight a.m., Bel left home and called his dad shortly after saying he was not feeling okay mentally. His father wanted him back so they could talk but had sent his youngest child to school first. Police arrived later that morning with news that his son had died.

One month earlier, Bel spoke openly about this experience on social media. He wrote that he came to America to pursue education without intending to commit crimes or hurt anyone. Now though he walks through United States streets carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation he never imagined experiencing. He stated clearly he did not come here to be treated like a criminal. How is a college athlete supposed to play sports with a GPS device strapped to his leg?

Springfield pastor Carl Ruby said Monday that the family believes Bel took his own life as a result of President Donald Trump's immigration agenda targeting TPS holders. On Facebook, Ruby described sitting with a grieving mother whose son threw himself in front of a semi truck after being teased by fellow students at Wright State about his ankle monitor. He wished President Trump could hear the wails coming from this family. The pastor emphasized that people need to know this was suicide caused by policies from the president, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Many of the roughly 15,000 Haitian immigrants living in Springfield have resided here in the United States for years without issue before these changes took hold. The family wants everyone to understand how government directives shaped their reality. Regulations affecting temporary protected status directly impacted lives on the ground. Without warning or adequate support systems, individuals faced sudden legal jeopardy that led to this heartbreaking outcome.

For years, he could not return home because that nation has been gripped by violence, chaos, and deep poverty.

ICE told WBTN it would not comment on the cause of death while the investigation is pending and refused to speculate about unverified claims regarding other individuals.

Bel finished high school in May and was ready to start his first semester at Wright State University. He could not play college soccer at Wittenberg University because he wore an ankle monitor. The Wittenberg men's soccer team shared this fact on a Facebook post.

"He took 2 trips to Cincinnati and Westerville to plead to the officers to remove the bracelet since he's a soccer player," Bel's father wrote on X. "He felt embarrassed and humiliated when he was among his classmates at the University." Last Friday, August 28, 2026, he told his dad that he felt humiliated because everyone else got uniforms from their JROTC program except him due to the bracelet.

Wright State University President Sue Edwards said the school is "heartbroken by this devastating loss."

Pierre was an active honors student who loved soccer and had already joined his classes and the campus community. The University mourns the death of Pierre and extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time.
