Grieving Father Demands End to Sanctuary Policies After Daughter's Death

Sep 17, 2026 •Politics

Anatoly Varfolomeev, a father consumed by grief for his daughter Anya, took aim at Democratic lawmakers Wednesday. He demanded an immediate end to sanctuary policies after her death in a 2021 crash caused by a driver who had been deported twice.

"It is outrageous," Varfolomeev stated on Fox & Friends. His words were directed at Reps. Pramila Jayapal of Washington and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania. These representatives seemed to imply that a recent Capitol Hill hearing was about politics rather than finding real answers.

Varfolomeev rejected their narrative completely. "I don't believe what they say because they say only part of the story," he insisted. He argued they presented just one slice of the truth, not the whole picture. To him, lawmakers should have united long ago to make Americans safer.

The 19-year-old Anya died alongside her childhood friend in that tragic wreck. Varfolomeev told Capitol Hill on Tuesday that he felt angry and devastated. He lamented the three-year wait to learn who was behind the crash, describing the jurisdiction as "sanctuary California."

Jayapal stood firm on her position. She insisted the hearing must target real solutions for an immigration system stuck in over 30 years without modernization. Lee added that certain corporations and fear-mongering politicians were profiting from mass enforcement actions.

The family eventually uncovered the driver's full history. Oscar Eduardo Ortega Anguiano was an illegal immigrant with a criminal record. He had served prison time, faced deportation in 2016 and again in 2021, and lacked a valid California license. He was driving under the influence when he crashed into Anya.

Varfolomeev said he reached out to state officials for answers but got silence. "None..." he replied when asked if anyone contacted his family. "There was nothing, no response." Fox News tried to get a statement from Gov. Gavin Newsom's office too, but heard nothing back.

He also pushed back hard on the idea that all immigrants are illegal. His own family entered the United States legally. Anya was born after they became citizens. "She was a regular American girl that was killed," he said. He placed the blame squarely on California politicians and the Biden administration, calling it their absolute responsibility.
