Georgia's 23-Year-Old Mayor Removed After Misusing Public Funds

Sep 16, 2026 •Crime

Georgia's youngest elected mayor has been kicked out of office just ten months into his term. Jayden Williams, who recently turned 23, held the post in Stockbridge, a city south of Atlanta, before facing allegations that he misused public money and sent sexually suggestive messages to an 18-year-old high school student.

The Stockbridge City Council voted to impeach him after he took office in January. On Sunday, the city issued a statement confirming the action. "The City of Stockbridge confirms that the City Council has taken formal action concerning the Office of Mayor," they said. The mayor was removed from his seat immediately.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported that Williams faced accusations regarding his city purchasing card. He allegedly spent more than $4,000 on personal items like restaurant meals, clothing, haircuts, and a movie. Reports also say he used the card for $2,600 worth of gas and drove a city vehicle for private reasons. City workers spotted these odd transactions involving public funds and alerted management and legal counsel right away.

Williams told investigators he never meant to use city money for himself. He later paid back the cash. He claimed the government-issued card looked just like his personal one, which led to the mix-up. He said he swapped out both cards afterward to stop any future confusion.

The trouble deepened with another accusation: exchanging explicit images and messages with an 18-year-old male student. A police report noted that because the student was considered an adult under Georgia law, no criminal charges stuck for Williams in that specific instance. However, police still referred the case for administrative review. Officials worried about ethics and policy violations regarding an elected official interacting with a student in what they called a city-affiliated mentorship program.

In his own words, Williams said he met the teenager before ever running for office. He insisted the young man never took part in the "Mayor for a Day" event. "The individual was 18 years old at the time of our communication, meaning we were both adults," he stated. "I met this individual on November 30, 2025, and our online communication occurred before I was sworn into office in January 2026."

Before becoming mayor, Williams campaigned while still attending Clark Atlanta University. That record made him the youngest mayor in Georgia history at the time. On July 17, as the probe progressed, officials stripped him of certain official privileges. Yet he never faced criminal charges for the alleged conduct.
