Gen Z Avoids Calls Due to Anxiety Over Unexpected Demands
Seeing a phone buzz with an unexpected ring can terrify many young people. Experts now say Gen Z avoids answering because surprise conversations spark deep anxiety. Sophie Riegel, a best-selling author focused on intergenerational relationships, explains that ages 14 to 29 view unscheduled calls as demands for immediate attention. She revealed that chatting on the phone often feels stressful, awkward, and emotionally draining. The expert admits she avoids calls herself too. Speaking live requires a performance she finds inefficient use of time.

Riegel wrote in Psychology Today that receiving a text lets people wait until they are ready to respond. A new piece cites a 2024 study showing one quarter of those aged 18 to 34 never answer calls at all. That same research found seventy percent prefer texting over ringing. More than half of young adults link unexpected calls directly to bad news. Riegel explained that answering means dropping everything right then and rebuilding focus later. She does not work a standard nine-to-five schedule, so people assume she is free any hour.
Answering in real time leaves no chance to pause or choose words carefully. Texting provides a safety net with a backspace button for mistakes. Calls also force small talk nobody signed up for plus an uncomfortable goodbye that takes three attempts. Everything feels doable but ultimately draining. Speaking on the phone can feel inefficient too. A quick question easily turns into a twenty-minute conversation. While she enjoys catching up, she prefers giving full attention when possible. For a simple query, text gets answers in seconds and leaves a record to scroll back through.

Surprise calls send alarm bells ringing inside her head. To fix this divide, Riegel suggests a compromise between the two generations. She advises Gen Z to pick up when free while telling older people not to take it personally if someone cannot answer. The best move is always to text first. A quick message asking Free to call tonight removes the alarm and lets everyone pick a time for full attention. If you have a question needing a short answer, text works perfectly fine. Wanting to catch up or having an emotional conversation calls are better choices. Finally, save surprise calls only for urgent moments. That way when her phone rings unexpectedly she knows it is important and will answer right away.
