GameStop Reopens Shuttered Stores After Insiders Buy Shares

Sep 15, 2026 •US News

GameStop is bringing select shuttered locations back online across the nation following fresh investment moves by top insiders. The video game retailer officially declared on social media that these stores would start reopening Sept. 11. A company spokesperson told FOX Business that at least one location in Brooklyn, Ohio was included in this initial wave, though a full list of returning addresses has not yet been released.

This turnaround follows a long stretch of shutting doors and slashing costs. GameStop closed hundreds of shops over recent years to trim expenses and reshape its retail model. Now, the focus shifts to getting people back inside.

The timing matches closely with major stock purchases by the company's leadership. On Sept. 10, CEO Ryan Cohen bought 1 million shares of Class A common stock for about $20 million, paying a weighted average price near $20.38 per share. Alain Attal, who sits on GameStop's board, also stepped in with a purchase of 5,000 shares that day for roughly $100,000.

But the story isn't just about reopening bricks and mortar; sales are changing shape beneath the surface. Collectibles like trading cards now make up 45.1% of GameStop's net sales in its most recent quarter. That is a jump from around 29% during fiscal 2025. Collectibles revenue climbed 57% compared to the same quarter last year. The company leans harder into these items as it moves away from selling traditional video game software.

While Sony plans to drop physical PlayStation discs for new releases starting in 2028, GameStop is betting on keeping those shelves stocked with other things.
