Frozen Lake Horror: Woman Survives After Vehicle Plunges Into Icy Waters During Ice Fishing Trip

A Maine woman found herself trapped between life and death on a frozen lake during an ice fishing trip when her vehicle plunged into icy waters. Leanne Tapley was driving her brother's pickup truck across Moosehead Lake around 1:00 a.m. Sunday, heading back to shore for the restroom after hours of fishing with friends. The incident unfolded in seconds as the truck broke through fragile ice and sank beneath the surface.

Tapley described the moment as one of the most terrifying experiences of her life. She had been confident in their preparation: earlier measurements showed 36 inches of ice, a thickness widely considered safe for vehicles. However, she later discovered an unseen pressure ridge that compromised the stability of the frozen lake. 'There were no signs of weak ice,' she told Bangor Daily News. 'No puddles, cracks or slush.'

The truck sank rapidly after hitting hidden weakness in the ice. Tapley was forced to open a window and crawl out while her legs remained inside the vehicle. She sat on the door for a brief moment before slipping backward as water rushed into the cabin. Her husband, Chase, and others from their fishing group scrambled toward the scene when she called for help.

Her brother Jake Fitzpatrick answered the phone call almost instantly and immediately alerted rescue teams. 'He heard his sister's panicked desperation,' her father, Craig Fitzpatrick, later wrote on social media. 'As is typical of him, he rushed towards danger with reckless abandon.' Tapley herself praised her brother's quick 'I wouldn't choose anyone else to be my brother!'

The rescue team arrived in time to pull her from the icy water and onto solid ice. Though shaken, she emerged unharmed. Her husband helped guide her back to safety while others worked on retrieving their submerged vehicle. Tapley confirmed all those present were safe but emphasized that recovering the truck would require further assistance.

The incident has not deterred Tapley from returning to Moosehead Lake for future fishing trips. 'Will I be back? Yes, absolutely,' she wrote in a Facebook post. However, her experience has changed how she approaches ice travel: 'Will I be driving a truck on the ice again? No, absolutely not.'

Despite the trauma of nearly drowning, Tapley found some silver lining in their adventure. She shared photos of the group's successful fishing trip online and noted they caught lake trout, cusk fish, and other species. Her father described it as 'a night to remember,' though he acknowledged the ice's unpredictable dangers.

Efforts are now underway to extract the truck from the frozen lake by Wednesday. Tapley remains focused on moving forward while reflecting on how quickly nature can shift from a serene winter landscape to an unforgiving environment.
