French Soldier Killed in Erbil Drone Attack, Macron Confirms
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the death of Senior Sergeant Arno Frion, a member of the 7th Alpine Battalion of Chasseurs Alpins, who was among the French soldiers injured in a drone attack on a military base in Erbil province, Iraq. The president shared the news via social media platform X, stating, 'Senior Sergeant Arno Frion of the 7th Alpine Battalion of Chasseurs Alpins died for France during the attack in the Erbil region of Iraq.'
Macron added that multiple other French soldiers were also injured in the incident. He emphasized that France's military presence in Iraq is conducted under agreements aimed at combating terrorism. 'The war in Iran cannot serve as a justification for such attacks,' he wrote, linking the attack to the broader regional tensions that have escalated following recent conflicts.

Earlier reports indicated that six French soldiers were injured when drones struck the base in Erbil. The attack occurred amid heightened volatility in the Middle East, which has been shaped by escalating hostilities between Iran and its adversaries. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran, targeting multiple cities, including Tehran. One strike hit the residence of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, though he survived the attack.

In response to the U.S.-Israeli operation, Iran has carried out retaliatory missile and drone strikes on Israeli targets, American military installations, and allied forces across the region. The Iranian government has framed its actions as a direct countermeasure against what it describes as foreign aggression. Meanwhile, U.S. officials have characterized their own operation as a 'complete disaster,' highlighting the unpredictable consequences of the campaign.
The drone attack in Erbil underscores the risks faced by international military personnel stationed in Iraq, where tensions between regional powers and external actors continue to complicate security dynamics. French authorities have not yet provided further details on the investigation into the incident or whether any group has claimed responsibility for the strike.
