Former Candidate Defends Controversial Music Video Depicting Violence

Aug 26, 2026 •Entertainment

Bobby Pulido, a Latin Grammy Award-winning artist and Democratic candidate for Congress in Texas' 15th District, stood up for fellow singer Gerardo Ortiz back in 2016. The defense came after critics slammed a music video titled "Fuiste Mía" or "You were mine." In the clip, a man walks in on his girlfriend cheating. He shoots her lover. Then he handcuffs the woman to a pole, blindfolds her, gropes her, shoves her into a car trunk, and lights the vehicle on fire. The scene depicts sexual violence and murder.

Public outcry followed. Pulido called it merely artistic direction. "I've made videos with suggestive images; some have stayed, others have been edited, and still others were never used. That's the decision of the artist and their team," he told reporters at the time. He argued that viewers had grown numb to graphic content.

"And what happens when there's a [car] accident?" Pulido asked in that same interview. "Traffic doesn't flow because people slow down or even stop to see what happened; something similar happens with the regional Mexican genre when these kinds of incidents occur."

He admitted he did not always agree with how other artists portrayed women, but insisted everyone has a right to their own opinion. The resurfaced comments now sit at the center of fresh scrutiny as Pulido seeks a seat in the U.S. House against incumbent Monica De La Cruz. The 15th District is one of the nation's most competitive races.

De La Cruz, representing Texas' Republican Party, last won re-election in 2024 with 57.1% of the vote over Democratic nominee Michelle Vallejo's 42.9%. Pulido filed to challenge her. His campaign says this controversy is a distraction from bigger issues on the other side of the aisle.

"This is emblematic of national Republicans doing anything and everything to distract voters from what are very real, not based on a fictional video, child abuse accusations against Monica De La Cruz and her refusal to release the Epstein files after thousands of girls were trafficked and abused," a spokesperson for Pulido said.

Pulido's past controversies also include posting links to explicit sites on his X account and a social media post showing him seemingly urinating on President Donald Trump's Hollywood Walk of Fame star. He dismissed both as jokes or inevitable sides of using Twitter, noting in 2024 that "it's impossible to have Twitter and not watch porn."

In 2018, Pulido faced another storm when a registered sex offender appeared at a Texas middle school benefit concert he organized. At the time, Pulido claimed he did not know the guest's status. Axios reported later that he has called coverage of the incident a "nothing story."

His former wife, Johnny Hernández, accused De La Cruz of verbally abusing his 14-year-old daughter from a previous relationship during divorce proceedings in 2021. The case adds another layer to the ongoing debate over Pulido's character and fitness for office.

Texas Republicans are still arguing over a music video that sparked outrage. Monica De La Cruz is running against Bobby Pulido for the state legislature. Her campaign says they did not press charges or open an investigation into the allegations. They claim she knows she is losing so she is using the RNC to do her dirty work. The group said she deliberately twisted a decade-old Spanish-language interview. In that old clip, Bobby stated he respects artists' right to make their own music. Republicans once believed in this freedom but apparently not when it comes to opponents.

One Republican onlooker remains unconvinced by these defenses of past behavior. Zach Kraft is a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee. He told Fox News Digital that Pulido has spent his entire adult life defending perverts and predators. Kraft said he lashes out at law enforcement officers who keep Texans safe. The official called him a truly sick individual who is morally rotten. This statement came after clearing their respective primaries in the race ahead.

Pulido and De La Cruz will face off in the state's general elections on Nov. 3. Voters must decide between these two candidates soon. The controversy continues to divide party members even as the primary season ends. Facts show no charges were filed by authorities yet.
