Ford Recalls Millions of Pickup Trucks Over Gear Shift Issue
Ford is recalling approximately 1.4 million U.S. pickup trucks. A software fault may cause unexpected gear downshifts. The NHTSA announced this safety alert on Friday. This follows an expanded investigation into F-150 gear changes.
The NHTSA reported two potentially related injuries and one accident. However, Ford stated they are unaware of related injuries. The company also denied any related accidents or fires. This issue results in noncompliance with federal safety standards. It also reduces trailer control and visibility for others.
The recall affects seven different vehicle types. Over one million F-250 models are included. These were produced from April 5, 2021, to February 6, 2026. Additionally, 13,115 E-Transit 2026 vehicles are impacted. About 75,000 multipurpose passenger vehicles from 2021 to 2026 are affected.

An over-the-air update arrives this May. Drivers can also visit dealers for free software updates. This follows a February recall of four million vehicles. That glitch involved the Integrated Trailer Module. It caused failures in brakes, signals, and taillights. Such errors increase the risk of dangerous collisions.
Communication loss can occur even without a trailer. This happens after a vehicle exits "sleep mode." Drivers may see a "Trailer Brake Module Fault" notification.
