Florida Sheriff Condemns 'Vicious' Attack on 77-Year-Old Woman by Immigrant Suspect

Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County, Florida, spoke out on X with fury over a brutal crime allegedly committed by a 24-year-old man from Honduras. The suspect is Axel Antonio Espinal Herrera. He reportedly broke into the home of a 77-year-old woman early Saturday morning around 4 a.m.

Judd called the act an "over-the-top" and "vicious sexual battery." He stated this was one of the most horrific crimes seen in the county in decades. The elderly victim woke to noise, saw Herrera enter her bedroom, and watched him forcibly strip her clothes before attacking her. She slapped him when she tried to get away.

"He chased after her," a statement from the sheriff's office explained. "He dragged her back inside and choked her." Afterward, he left the scene while she called for help. Detectives searched the neighborhood and found Herrera in a nearby home with two other Honduran immigrants.

Herrera was taking a shower when officers arrived. His description matched what the victim told police. Clothing described by the woman was also found at the house. During the search, detectives noticed multiple scratches on Herrera's body that fit the assault story. Cocaine and drug paraphernalia were in his possession too.

He faces kidnapping, sexual battery by force, burglary, battery, tampering with evidence, cocaine possession, loitering, and prowling charges. Under Florida law, his illegal status elevates each charge by one category. This means he could receive multiple life sentences if convicted. ICE received notice and placed a detainer on him. The two other men in the house were taken into custody as well.

Judd made it clear that Herrera would be in a United States prison for the rest of his life upon conviction. "Sexual battery is without a doubt one of the most horrific crimes," Judd said. A violent assault on a stranger pushes this crime higher. Adding illegal status pushes it over the top.

"Do I need to say more?" he asked regarding the details. The suspect was a young man attacking an elderly woman in the middle of the night after breaking into her home. This incident highlights how vulnerable communities can feel when trust is broken. It also shows why law enforcement must work hard to catch criminals regardless of their background.
