Fetterman Accidentally Calls Himself Republican at Texas Event

Sep 27, 2026 •Politics

Political watchers have wondered for months whether Pennsylvania's Democratic Senator John Fetterman plans to flip parties and join the Republicans. The question seemed ready to be answered at a recent event in Texas. During the Texas Tribune festival, standing next to Major Garrett of CBS News, Fetterman accidentally claimed he has always been a Republican.

"Why not become an independent?" asked the host after a member of the crowd spoke up.

"Because I'm a lifelong Republican," Fetterman replied.

Garrett did not hesitate to correct him immediately.

"Democrat," Garrett said.

The correction made the audience laugh. Fetterman shook his head and chuckled at his own mistake. "That's a moment right there!" Garrett told the crowd. "That's clippable, ladies and gentlemen! Circulate!"

Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, has often criticized his party while aligning with Republicans on several key issues during the Trump era. He appeared well aware that this slip-up was headed straight for social media. "I guarantee you, that's gonna break through," Fetterman said. "That'll get clipped."

He eventually set the record straight. "I'm a lifelong Democrat," he stated later. This wasn't the first time his comments drifted far from the Democratic line this month. Earlier in September, he gave a video address at the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas to praise fellow Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick.

Fetterman dropped a bombshell on his party with that surprise message. "I have this opportunity to introduce this great American, a great senator, and yes, he's in a different party. But I'm proud to count him as my great friend," he declared at the time. The Democrat then briefly mentioned President Donald Trump. He pointed to the iconic US Steel Mill behind him in the shot and added that "he will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley."

Reaction among Democrats was fierce. Congressman Chris Deluzio, a Democrat representing one of the nation's top GOP-targeted congressional seats in Pennsylvania's 17th district, called out Fetterman for being "too lazy to do it in person." In a statement after the speech, Fetterman said he would not leave the Democratic Party.

"I'm a lifelong Democrat who votes overwhelmingly with my party - and should the Senate flip in November, I will still be the 51st vote that I ran on," he wrote in a release to The Washington Sun shortly after the video played. Trump was seen at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on September 27, 2026.

Earlier in the summer, Fetterman did reveal one ultimate red line that would make him abandon the Democrats. "If our party ever becomes, and just makes it official, the anti-Israel party, that's when I would leave because that's been a moral clarity for me," he shared at an event. He also noted his long-term concern about the Democratic Party. "As I am a member of that, is that our party is going to back away and turn their back to Israel." That same month, 103 of 211 Democrats in the US House of Representatives voted against providing aid to Israel, while 10 more of their colleagues voted present on the measure.
