Federal investigators confirm suspect shot Secret Service agent before Trump assassination attempt.

May 4, 2026 Crime

Federal investigators have confirmed that the individual accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump is the same person who shot a Secret Service agent at a recent White House correspondents' dinner. While authorities initially withheld specifics about the injury sustained by the agent, who was clad in a bulletproof vest, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro clarified the situation on Sunday. Speaking to CNN, Pirro stated with certainty that the projectile that struck the agent came directly from the weapon carried by the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen.

"It is definitively his bullet. He hit at that Secret Service agent. He had every intention to kill him and anyone who got in his way, on his way to killing the president of the United States," Pirro said. She described the attack as a premeditated and calculated act of violence aimed at eliminating the president and anyone standing in his path. Physical evidence supports this conclusion; a pellet from Allen's shotgun was found intertwined with the fibers of the agent's protective vest. This forensic finding effectively rules out the possibility that the agent was injured by friendly fire, a theory that had circulated previously.

The confirmation of these facts could lead to further legal charges against the 31-year-old suspect. Allen currently faces three major accusations: attempting to assassinate the president, transporting a firearm across state lines with the intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. A conviction on the charge of attempted assassination carries a potential sentence of life in prison.

According to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Allen traveled by train from near Los Angeles to Chicago, and then to Washington, D.C., arriving on April 24, the day before the gala at the Washington Hilton hotel. During the event, Allen approached a security checkpoint on the hotel terrace, one level above the ballroom where the president was seated. Blanche recounted the chaotic moments of the attack: "He ran through the magnetometer holding a long gun. As he did so, US Secret Service personnel assigned to the checkpoint heard a loud gunshot."

One officer was struck in the chest but survived because his ballistic vest functioned as intended. In a display of bravery, the injured officer returned fire, discharging his weapon five times at Allen. The suspect was not hit and fell to the ground, where he was quickly apprehended. Authorities report that Allen arrived at the scene armed with a shotgun, a semiautomatic pistol, and three knives.

This incident marks the third assassination attempt against President Trump since 2024 and has sent shockwaves through the American political landscape. The White House has blamed the Democratic opposition for inciting such violence through their verbal attacks on the administration. However, critics note that Trump himself is known for personally attacking his opponents, leading some to accuse him of using the recent shooting to silence his rivals.
