Father killed meeting newborn after crashing into street racing SUVs

Jul 15, 2026 Crime

A father driving to meet his newborn child for the first time was killed in a horrific crash after being struck by a vehicle allegedly engaged in street racing. Sergio Hill, 32, died alongside his friend Alvaro "Tito" Castillo Jr., 35, when their Toyota Camry collided with a BMW SUV in South Los Angeles on the morning of July 10.

Investigators say the fatal crash occurred in the Hyde Park neighborhood as the Toyota attempted to make a left turn. The BMW struck them broadside at high speed. Witnesses reported seeing the black BMW racing alongside a Tesla moments before the impact. Ken Smith, who owns a mini-mart near Crenshaw Boulevard, heard the vehicles zoom by and saw them through his window before hearing the loud crash that signaled two people were gone.

The collision left Castillo's young daughter in critical condition as she was rushed to a local hospital by firefighters and paramedics. The BMW driver also sustained injuries during the incident but has not been identified; authorities released him after he passed a sobriety test, ruling out drugs or alcohol as factors. LAPD officials stated that no crime is currently suspected and described the event as an apparent traffic accident, though the investigation continues.

Hill leaves behind two sons and two daughters, while Castillo survives with two daughters. A GoFundMe tribute describes Hill as "the sweetest man" with a humble, generous spirit who made everyone around him feel like family. His loved ones mourn his sudden passing, noting that he had so much life ahead of him and left an unimaginable void in the community.
