Famous crocodile Panchito attacks French tourist in Mexico's Riviera Maya

May 18, 2026 Crime

Chaos erupted in Mexico's Riviera Maya when a famous crocodile attacked an elderly French tourist near Tulum. The creature, named Panchito, had gained social media fame for swimming peacefully beside snorkelers and divers. Witnesses claim visitors provoked the animal by throwing rocks at it before the incident occurred.

On Tuesday morning just after 11am, Panchito bit the 75-year-old man identified as Jean Jaques Kerempranas. Photos from the scene show bloodied injuries to his feet and left arm following the strike. Local news outlets report Kerempranas received treatment at Costamed Hospital and remains in stable condition.

This event marks the first recorded attack involving Panchito after years of calm interactions with humans. The location, Casa Cenote, sits roughly 15 minutes north of Tulum on the road to Cancun. This unique spot mixes saltwater and freshwater, creating a narrow habitat where wildlife and tourists frequently share the water.

Dive operators regularly promoted excursions featuring Panchito while tourists queued for photographs. However, wildlife experts repeatedly warned that the situation remained dangerous despite the animal's habituation. Specialists note that crocodiles do not lose their wild instincts simply because they grow accustomed to human presence.

Environmental specialists argue that treating a wild predator as a tourist attraction creates unnecessary risk. The attack has now forced local authorities to act with officials in Tulum drafting new formal rules. Proposed measures include installing warning signs, restricting activities near crocodiles, and tightening oversight of tour operators.

Authorities have not yet announced whether they will relocate, remove, or euthanize the crocodile. The incident highlights how limited access to information often obscures the true dangers of wildlife tourism. Officials must balance public interest with safety before escalating tensions further.
