Explosion in Mumbai Elevator Injures Student, Sparks Negligence Probe

The incident unfolded in a split second inside a lift at Amol Tower in Goregaon, Mumbai, on Monday night. Tapriya recounted arriving at the building from Surat, Gujarat, to visit her aunt. The lift door closed moments before the explosion, leaving her and others with no choice but to flee as flames erupted. Witnesses later described the scene as chaotic, with the trio escaping just seconds before the lift doors sealed them inside.

CCTV footage captured the sequence of events: Tapriya entering the lift with a suitcase, followed by Mahato with the balloons. A third man, dressed in black, entered moments before the inferno. The footage shows all three rushing out of the lift as flames spread rapidly. Police statements revealed that Mahato was carrying 10 to 12 balloons ordered by Arpit Jain, a resident of the building, for a family celebration. This detail would later be scrutinized in the negligence case against the shop owner who sold the balloons.

Authorities have accused Jaiswal, the shop owner, of failing to provide safety instructions to the delivery man. According to police, Jaiswal was booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 125 for negligence. The investigation highlights a critical gap in the shop's protocol—no warnings about the potential hazards of hydrogen-filled balloons were provided to Mahato, who was unaware of the risks. This omission, police allege, directly contributed to the incident.

Earlier this year, a similar incident in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, saw a birthday girl's face nearly engulfed in flames when a candle's hot tip ignited hydrogen-filled balloons. Nozza Usmanova, the birthday celebrant, narrowly escaped injury as the flames licked the doorway. Unlike the Mumbai incident, no one was harmed in the Uzbekistan event. However, the two cases share a chilling commonality: the vulnerability of celebratory decorations when mishandled.

The Mumbai explosion has sparked questions about safety regulations for balloon deliveries. While police focus on Jaiswal's shop, investigators are also examining whether the balloons themselves met safety standards. Hydrogen-filled balloons, though popular for their buoyancy, are highly flammable. Industry experts suggest stricter guidelines for retailers and delivery personnel. The case also raises broader concerns about the risks of using such decorations in enclosed spaces like lifts.

Tapriya's account of the incident remains one of the clearest firsthand descriptions. She described the suddenness of the explosion, the searing heat, and the disorientation that followed. Her injuries, though serious, were not life-threatening. Mahato, the delivery man, also escaped with burns but no long-term harm. Both survivors emphasized the shock of the event, questioning how a routine delivery could so quickly turn into a crisis.
