Experts Warn Against Dangerous DIY Ice Fan Hacks During UK Heatwave

Jun 23, 2026 Lifestyle

With temperatures across the United Kingdom projected to reach 40°C, many residents are desperate for relief from the intense heat. Social media platforms are flooded with viral suggestions for cooling down, including a popular do-it-yourself air conditioning unit. Users claim that attaching bags of ice to a fan or covering it with a frozen towel can effectively lower room temperatures.

Despite the allure of these quick fixes, experts from Electrical Safety First have issued a stern warning against attempting them. Giuseppe Capanna, a Product Safety Engineer at the organization, cautions that these internet trends often lead to dangerous situations. He explains that melting ice can cause water to touch the fan's motor, creating a lethal risk of electric shock for anyone nearby.

The charity has noted that thousands of videos on TikTok demonstrate these hazardous adaptations to standard fans. Beyond avoiding dangerous social media trends, the group advises against leaving fans running overnight while people sleep. While humid nights might tempt households to maintain airflow, a mechanical fault occurring during rest could go unnoticed until it is too late.

If a fan is essential for sleep, safety experts recommend ensuring a smoke alarm is fully functional within the home. They also suggest placing the device on a flat, stable surface to prevent it from tipping over. Regular maintenance is equally critical, as dust accumulation in vents or the motor can cause overheating and potential ignition.

Capanna warns that shoppers often rush to purchase cheaper fans during heatwaves, sometimes ignoring safety standards. He emphasizes that safety begins with buying from reputable high street retailers where products meet high manufacturing standards. Furthermore, consumers should verify that their specific model has not been recalled or developed faults during its usage life.

Any faint buzzing sounds or visible wear on cables should never be ignored, as these are clear indicators of underlying electrical issues. Following manufacturer instructions and unplugging devices before cleaning are essential steps to maintain proper operation. Ultimately, the advice remains consistent: prioritize safety over temporary cooling tricks that could result in injury or death.
