Expanded World Cup introduces new round of 32 and head-to-head tiebreaker rules.

Jun 23, 2026 Sports

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is rapidly approaching its knockout phase, a significant shift from the previous 32-team format to a massive 48-team tournament. The competition will kick off its elimination bracket with the round of 32, featuring matches scheduled between June 28 and July 3.

Fifteen teams have officially secured their spots in the next round. The qualification process is governed by strict criteria: the top two finishers from each of the 12 groups automatically advance, alongside the eight teams that finish third with the best overall records. This structure introduces the round of 32 for the first time in World Cup history. The subsequent stages will include the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, a third-place playoff, and the championship final set for July 19.

A major regulatory change has been implemented for this expanded event. For the first time at a World Cup, head-to-head records will supersede goal difference as the primary tiebreaker for teams finishing with equal points. Additionally, the bracket for the eight best third-placed teams will be determined by a rigorous hierarchy of metrics, starting with points, followed by overall goal difference, total goals scored, and disciplinary records (yellow and red cards), with FIFA world rankings serving as the final arbiter if necessary.

Despite these structural nuances, four nations have already been eliminated from the tournament. Haiti, Türkiye, Tunisia, and Jordan were unable to secure a spot among the best third-placed teams or finish in the top two of their respective groups, as they lost crucial matches against the teams that ultimately qualified.

As of June 23, only one team has officially confirmed its place in the knockout stage: Mexico. The co-host nation, which has been performing well in Group A, clinched the top position by defeating South Korea 1-0 on Thursday, June 18. This victory marked Mexico as the first team to qualify for the round of 32, setting a precedent for the remaining group winners and third-placed finishers who will soon join the bracket.

The Mexican national team launched their World Cup campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory against South Africa in a chaotic opening match. Meanwhile, the United States secured their place in the knockout rounds following a decisive 2-0 win over Australia on Friday, June 19. This result placed the Americans at the top of Group D, following their initial 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay.

Germany joined the last 32 as the third team to advance, defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 on Saturday, June 20. The German squad, which previously failed to progress from the group stage in Russia 2018 and Qatar, began their tournament with a staggering 7-1 victory over Curacao. Argentina sealed their path to the next round with a 2-0 win over Austria on Monday, June 22, as Lionel Messi scored twice to become the World Cup's all-time leading scorer with 18 goals.

The Argentine captain also achieved his maiden tournament hat-trick in their opening 3-0 victory against Algeria, guaranteeing the reigning champions the top spot in Group J. France, the pre-tournament favorites, secured a place in the round of 32 with a 3-0 win over Iraq later that Monday, where Kylian Mbappe scored a brace. The 2018 world champions had previously beaten Senegal 3-1 to start their tournament, with Mbappe scoring twice in that game as well.

Norway, returning to the World Cup after 28 years, beat Senegal 3-2 in their second game to seal a knockout spot. The Norwegians started their campaign with a 4-1 thrashing of Iraq. Haiti became the first team eliminated from the tournament after suffering a 3-0 loss to Brazil on Friday, June 19. Playing in their first World Cup since 1974, they also lost 1-0 to Scotland in their opening match.

Turkiye followed suit shortly after, bowing out following a 1-0 defeat to ten-man Paraguay later on Friday. They had previously suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Australia in their first group match, marking their first appearance at the tournament after 24 years. Tunisia became the third team to be eliminated after losing 4-0 to Japan on Saturday, June 20. This defeat came shortly after they suffered a heavy 5-1 loss to Sweden in the opener.

Tunisia was the first African team to win a World Cup match when they beat Mexico in 1978, though they have never progressed beyond the group stages. Jordan, one of the four debutants at the tournament, bowed out on Monday, June 22, after losing 2-1 to Algeria in their second group game. The Asian side also lost 3-1 to Austria in their opening game.
