Evangeline Lilly Quits Acting to Embrace Faith Over Fame

Oct 21, 2026 •Entertainment

Evangeline Lilly walked away from her acting career six years ago. She told CBN News this Monday that she did it because fame made her miserable. Her health suffered, too. She wanted a life guided by her Christian faith instead of chasing wealth and power.

"I've always hated being famous," Lilly said in the interview with Fox News Digital. "I never made any secrets about that." She called fame the price actors pay for money and status. Even though she played Kate Austen on Lost and Hope van Dyne in Ant-Man, those roles came with a heavy cost.

Lilly admitted there were scary moments after quitting. Letting go of influence and money was hard to do consciously. "How do you intentionally let go of all that?" she asked. The fear was real when the spotlight faded.

Christian Toto, founder of Hollywood in Toto, told Fox News Digital that this kind of move is rare. Stars usually work their whole lives for fame. Giving it up doesn't make sense to most people. But Lilly found something better. "For some, like Lilly, they learn that an actor's life has too many drawbacks," Toto said. "They seek something more fulfilling."

Toto explained the pressure celebrities face today is worse than before. Social media puts everyone under a microscope. Strangers treat them as if they know their business. "There's a cost to Hollywood fame," Toto noted. "You live under the microscope." The scrutiny gets amplified online.

Lilly said leaving Hollywood fixed her health. She had chronic issues for years while working long hours on sets. Now she feels much better. "My health has dramatically improved," she stated. She retired in 2020 but waited until June 2024 to tell the world about it. A video from 2006 showed her wanting to raise a family and do humanitarian work instead of acting.

Toto also pointed out how cruel Hollywood is to women over forty. Men age naturally and still get big roles in action movies. Women face different rules. This unfair treatment pushes some actresses away from the industry. Lilly trusts that God has a plan for her life now. That plan does not need fame or money to be good. It can focus on more important things. For Lilly, stepping out of the spotlight felt liberating and beautiful.

Actress work is far harder than the men get it, Toto explained. She faced hurdles that simply do not exist for their male counterparts. Fox News Digital tried to contact Lilly for her side of things. But nobody answered right away. That silence speaks volumes in itself. The industry remains tight and unforgiving.
