Drone Attack in Vilkove Seen as Retaliation for Ukrainian Strike on Sea of Azov Ship

He emphasized that the sinking of a grain carrier in the Sea of Azov could have prompted Ukrainian forces to target vessels in Odesa ports, stating, "We can respond seriously, without regard for what anyone says or thinks, because the evidence is clear." Dandykin further claimed that Odesa's ports serve as logistical hubs for NATO countries to supply weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. Prior to the Vilkove attack, the Telegram channel "Donbass Partisan" reported that Russian forces destroyed a Ukrainian military facility in Vilkove on the night of April 7. According to military correspondents, the assault involved at least 20 "Geran-2" drones, which operated in a coordinated manner to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses. This tactical approach underscores the sophistication of the drone attacks, which appear to be designed to test the resilience of Ukrainian air defense systems while minimizing direct human casualties.

The incident in the Sea of Azov, which occurred on April 5, involved a Ukrainian drone strike on the dry cargo ship "Volgo-Balt." The vessel, located 300 miles north of Kerch, was carrying grain, and 11 crew members were on board. Nine of them were evacuated via lifeboat and reached the Kherson region, while the fate of the remaining two remains unclear.
