DRC Football Team Arrives in U.S. After 21-Day European Quarantine
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) national football team has officially arrived in the United States for the World Cup, concluding a period of isolation in Europe mandated by U.S. health authorities. Following an Ebola outbreak in their home nation, American officials required the squad to complete a 21-day quarantine period in a European location before entry was permitted. Consequently, the team spent three weeks isolating in Belgium on a flight originating from Paris, arriving in the U.S. on Thursday to avoid being denied entry for the tournament.
Head coach Sebastien Desabre expressed optimism that his players would deliver a strong performance to lift the spirits of their compatriots currently grappling with the virus. "It has been a while since the people have seen the team at the World Cup," Desabre stated. "We already had the honour of qualifying for the finals. Now, it is up to us to put up a good showing in this tournament."
The DRC, which is making its first World Cup appearance since the 1974 edition when they competed as Zaire, faced significant logistical hurdles following the outbreak last month. This health crisis forced the cancellation of their planned pre-tournament training camp in their home country and necessitated their relocation to Belgium for preparation. The disruption extended further when a scheduled warm-up match against Chile in Spain was called off due to concerns regarding the potential spread of the virus.
Despite these challenges, Desabre noted that the squad successfully adapted to the evolving circumstances. "We adapted to the situation," the French coach explained. "We had to focus, as we have had to adapt often. That is what we did. We worked well, we played two tough friendlies, and here we are. Now, it is another step for us."
The team will be based in Houston for the duration of the competition. Their schedule includes their opening Group K match on June 17 against Portugal. Subsequently, the squad is scheduled to travel to Guadalajara, Mexico, to face Colombia on June 23, before heading to Atlanta to play Uzbekistan on June 28.
