Dodgers Stall, AL Races Tighten as Postseason Picture Emerges
The Dodgers keep falling while the Red Sox finally drop a series for the first time since early July. The American League Central division looks like it will be decided down to the final pitch. Most MLB divisions are hotly contested right now, and both wild-card races remain open to practically anyone. You have to wonder why some teams sold at the deadline instead of buying better. Here is where the postseason picture stands with just under two months left in the season.
The Rays extended their division lead to five games after sweeping the Mariners over the weekend. The Yankees split two extra-inning outings and won two of three against the Braves recently. Max Fried continues to work his way back into the rotation alongside Gerrit Cole. New York remains without Aaron Judge due to a rib fracture, and Cody Bellinger is out four to six weeks with a hamstring strain.
The Red Sox streak of nine consecutive series wins ended over the weekend after dropping tight games to Oakland. This left Boston 6.5 games behind Tampa Bay and 1.5 games behind the Yankees in the standings. The White Sox remain in first place after taking two of three from Cleveland recently. Chicago has weathered slugging rookie Munetaka Murakami's extended injury absence while maintaining the fourth-best run differential in the AL.

Cleveland and Detroit sit tied for second, 3.0 games behind Chicago, while Minnesota lurks 3.5 games back after dropping back-to-back four to three heartbreakers in Milwaukee. Four teams are still fighting in this division with the postseason lurking around the corner. The Astros hold a slim one-game lead in the AL West over the Rangers who fell ten to five to the Orioles on Sunday.
Seattle dropped both weekend contests to Tampa Bay, falling 4.0 games behind Houston. The most wide-open division in MLB might be the AL West, and that is not just because the top three teams remain within four games of each other. The Rangers have been outscored by 28 runs on the year, while the Astros have been outscored by 23. The Mariners carry a minus-15 run differential but at least Seattle has allowed the fewest runs in the division with 474 total. This is anybody's division in part because no one is stepping up to take it yet.
The Yankees and Red Sox occupy the top two AL Wild Card spots, while the Rangers hold a paper-thin margin for the third spot. Cleveland, Detroit, and Minnesota remain within 1.5 games of Texas, keeping the AL postseason picture wide open. Boston's winning ways of late helped erase much of the early damage to its season, bringing it from a season-worst fourteen games under .500 to eleven games over. Nothing is locked up yet for any of these clubs however, as the Rangers have the Twins right on their tails and four more teams are within striking distance of Texas. The AL is a mess, but in a way that will be fun these last two months.
Atlanta pulled a game back in the Bronx, capping the three-game series with a 2-1 ten-inning victory on Sunday to maintain an 8.5-game division cushion over Philadelphia. The Braves dropped two games to the Yankees after reaching seventy wins, however, Atlanta holds the largest division lead in MLB. Ronald Acuña Jr continues to lead the lineup on offense and defense since returning in late July.

Acuña Jr has five homers and a .520 slugging percentage since returning in late-July, two games before the start of that winning streak. Atlanta is 46-20 with Acuña in the lineup in 2026, and 25-27 without him. Philadelphia was just 12-19 at the end of April, but consecutive eighteen-win months pushed it back into the NL East race.
July tested everyone's resolve, yet the Phillies still hold onto a wild-card spot if things sour again.
In the NL Central, the Brewers stay steady and currently lead Major League Baseball in both wins and run differential. Their pitching staff offers real depth, headlined by Jacob Misiorowski. He sits atop the Cy Young shortlist after becoming just the second pitcher in history to hit 200 strikeouts so fast. On Sunday alone he pushed his count to 204. The lineup plugged holes at shortstop and right field with rookies Cooper Pratt and Luis Lara. They also grabbed Dustin May before the trade deadline, and he earned a well-deserved victory in his first appearance for Milwaukee.

The Cubs suffered ten straight losses back in mid-May but managed two separate ten-game winning streaks since then. They have kept playing above .500 ball in their last games. Pete Crow-Armstrong has turned into an MVP contender following a quiet start. He now leads the majors in wins above replacement as he closes in on a 30-homer, 30-steal campaign while wearing Gold Glove gloves at center field.
The NL West looks shaky for some but strong for others. The Diamondbacks could be quite good. The Padres might turn decent if their hitters actually keep making contact and they have added Robbie Ray and Casey Mize to the rotation. That does not seem to matter much to the Dodgers, who remain 7.5 games ahead even after losing eight of their last nine contests. Los Angeles holds the second-best run differential in the National League. Losing Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher for an unknown stretch raises questions, but the team has already survived Mookie Betts going cold and injuries to Tommy Edman. They also weathered the storm of big offseason signing Kyle Tucker just being okay instead of great. Oh yes, Tarik Skubal is here now too. This squad can handle more than one small crisis before falling apart, yet those crises are starting to stack up.
In the wild-card race, the Cubs showed they can match the league's best teams after sweeping the Dodgers recently. The Phillies have slipped lately but remain strong thanks to their success against the Nationals this week. The Diamondbacks stay in the hunt, though their lead is thin with the Padres just 1.5 games back. The Marlins, Cardinals, Reds, and Pirates trail between 2.5 and 4.5 games out, leaving Pittsburgh furthest behind. Pittsburgh added Luke Weaver to fix major bullpen troubles, so maybe they are not as far down the list as it appears.
