Detroit Youth Leader Found Dead After Attacked at Northern Michigan Music Festival

A Detroit youth program leader was found naked and hanging out of a tent, two deep gashes marred his neck just above and below his collarbone on July 12. Lonn Hartman is 37 years old. He works for the nonprofit Friends of the Children Detroit. Two weeks have passed since that morning. Police say no arrests were made and suspects remain unidentified. Hartman lost eight pints of blood before he was rushed to a hospital. Now he can only blink or nod his head to speak.

Terace Garnier, a close friend, told WXYZ about the terrifying text message sent hours before the violence struck. We know someone did this to him because he sent a text just before telling a friend that he did not feel safe and was not with safe people, she said. The attack happened at Blissfest in northern Michigan's Harbor Springs. That is about 280 miles northwest of Detroit near the Canadian border. Hartman had gone there with a dance partner and others to perform. He went to bed early the night before he was found.

Friends say the recovery has been remarkable for such terrible wounds. It was looking like he shouldn't be alive right now, Garnier told FOX2 regarding the amount of blood lost. Paul Gross, another friend who spoke to FOX2, believes Hartman being a young Black man in a predominantly white area had something to do with the attack. Friends say they think it was a hate crime.

The Emmett County Sheriff's Office has been investigating. On Monday they released an update saying the investigation has been treated with the utmost importance and remains an active priority for our agency. To date, several items have been collected and transported to the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory for forensic examination and processing, the sheriff's office added. Investigators have conducted numerous interviews, and additional leads, tips, and information continue to be actively pursued.

The sheriff's office said they contacted Hartman's mother, father, and partner to provide regular updates. They urged anyone with information to reach out. Still, friends appear unsatisfied with the lack of answers or consequences for his attackers. Since the attack we have struggled to get answers, Garnier wrote in a GoFundMe organized by her friend to help cover mounting medical expenses.

This case shows how fragile safety can be even at large events like music festivals. Regulations and government directives are supposed to protect the public but sometimes fail when someone feels unsafe before an incident occurs. We need answers for Lonn Hartman and his family. The search for justice continues while he heals in a hospital bed, communicating only with blinks.

Garnier spoke to FOX2 about the lack of details. "To date, there has been little public information about this incident," he said. "We feel that many of our questions remain unanswered." Even as Garnier recovers from his devastating injuries in the hospital, Hartman worries about the underprivileged children he mentors in Detroit.

"I told him, I said 'hey I got an update for you,'" Garnier explained to the outlet. "Your kids miss you, and they want you to know they say they miss Mr. Lonn." She paused before adding more. "And as soon as I said that, tears just started streaming down his face. Even in the hospital bed he's still thinking about his kids."
