Detroit Police Chief Ordered Removal of Mayor's Personal Photos

Sep 23, 2026 •Politics

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield is at the center of a fresh media storm because her police chief attempted to wipe old photos from the internet. The images captured the politician with Marvin Walker, her former boyfriend. Todd Bettison, the head of Detroit Police, asked Jahdante Smith to take them down. Smith describes himself as a community activist who posted the pictures in July 2024 after being contacted by Sheffield's ex-lover. He says those photos go back to 2022. One shot shows the mayor kissing Walker on the cheek while another depicts them seated side-by-side on a gold throne.

Things turned sour when Smith refused to delete the content. The Detroit Police Department then seized his phone, according to Smith's account. Bettison has admitted he did reach out to Smith on August 5 regarding the images, but insists he was speaking as a civilian rather than in his official role. He told Fox News that he felt the photos were meant to shame and humiliate a woman, something no person should endure.

'The ongoing criminal investigation involving Mr. Smith is completely unrelated to this matter,' Bettison stated. 'It began before my phone call with him on August 5.' The department says it was executing a warrant at the time Smith's device was taken. That legal action started after a citizen filed a complaint alleging Smith threatened her life. A judge reviewed that evidence and granted permission for the seizure.

The Detroit Office of Inspector General confirmed to the Daily Mail that they are still probing Bettison but withheld further specifics. Sheffield offered very little detail when pressed by Fox News about the probe into her chief. She gave no comment on the investigation itself. Instead, she said she remains confident in his ability to lead the city in every major category of crime. 'Violent and non-violent crime continues to go down,' she added. 'And I think that's what Detroiters care about.'

Sheffield urged everyone, including journalists, to let the investigative process play out without interference. The mayor has been serving since January 2026 at age 39. This drama highlights how personal history can collide with public duty. It also raises questions about power dynamics within city leadership.

Police Chief Todd Bettison admitted he called Jahdante Smith to ask for image deletion. A recording proves the call happened. Yet the chief insists he was acting as a civilian then. Self-described activist Smith claims Detroit Police Chief Bettison ordered him to remove pictures of Sheffield with her ex, Marvin Walker. The Daily Mail reached out to the DPD, the mayor's office, and Smith for comment. They have not yet replied fully.

Sheffield told a reporter to 'calm down' when asked about seeing those photos online. She said she had no further comment on the matter. Sheffield is 39 years old. She has served as Detroit Mayor since January 2026. She married Rickey Jackson Jr just last month. He works as a program manager at a nonprofit organization.

The situation raises serious questions for public trust. Communities rely on transparency from their leaders. If officials hide images or demand deletions, what else might they conceal? Citizens deserve clear answers about who holds power and how that power is used. The mayor's office must address these concerns directly with facts.
